Step 1: Learn about PLA options at William Paterson University

William Paterson University accepts College Level Examination Program (CLEP) credits with the following exceptions:

  • A student cannot take a CLEP general exam if 60 or more credits have been earned.
  • A student cannot take a CLEP subject exam if 90 or more credits have been earned.
  • The University does not accept CLEP credit to fulfill the English Writing or Literature requirements for ENG1100 or ENG1500.
  • The University does not accept CLEP credit in a foreign language to fulfill the World Language requirement – although up to 6 credits in a foreign language can be applied towards free electives.

Credit earned through the DSST (formerly DANTES) examination program are currently not accepted by William Paterson. The University does, however, accept Thomas Edison Credit by Exam Program (TECEP) credits – so long as the credit is related to courses offered by William Paterson University.

In accordance with the recommendations of the American Council of Education (ACE), William Paterson University will award up to 16 credits to qualified veterans for military and academic experiences--as long as the credit is related to courses that William Paterson offers.

The University also will accept up to 30 credits by exam in total for military training, as long as the credit is related to courses that William Paterson offers.

IMPORTANT:

  • The University will accept transfer credits for up to half of the credits required for a major.
  • The University allows up to 30 credits by exam towards any baccalaureate degree.
  • The last 30 credits for any baccalaureate degree must be taken at William Paterson University.
